Important upcoming deadlines! Details below 🫶🏼

JAN 15 Q4 Estimated Payments:
This deadline is generally for business owners but may be applicable to other W2 tax payers who under withhold on their personal taxes. The importance of ES payments is to avoid underpaying penalties. It’s also nice to NOT owe a large amount at the end of the year.

JAN 31 W-2 and 1099 forms due:
This is the date that employers and contractors are required to file employees W2 and subs 1099’s. Most employers mail their W-2s, but check with yours to see if you can retrieve it online. We generally don’t see employees get theirs until the beginning of February due to mailing. If you do not receive yours from your employer by the beginning of February, I recommend contacting the employer for a copy or pulling a tax transcript if you cannot reach them.

MAR 17 1120s & 1065 Returns Due:
If you are a shareholder in an S Corporation or a Partner of a Partnership, your business return is due March 17th. It is always recommended to file S Corp and Partnership returns BEFORE you 1040 individual return so that you have a copy of your K1 before you file. If you are unsure of your business tax structure, speak to your tax accountant!

APR 15 1040 Tax Returns Due:
Your individual tax return is due on April 15th. If you file for an extension, it is important to know that your taxes are still due on April 15th, regardless if you have a 6-month extension. An extension only extend the filing of the return and not the taxes themselves.

To avoid capital gains you must start with your basis! Your basis and selling price is what determines capital gains.

Did you know that loan documents alone can’t give you the full picture of your tax basis?

Let’s break down what basis is and why it matters!

Your basis in a newly constructed home typically reflects your capital investment for tax purposes, and it increases with any capital improvements, like a kitchen remodel. This is called your adjusted basis.

When it comes time to sell your home, your basis plays a crucial role in calculating capital gains.

For instance, if you built or bought a home for $500,000 in 2021 and made $100,000 in improvements, your adjusted basis would be $600,000.

We also have the exclusion! If you’ve owned and lived in your home for at least 2 of the last 5 years, you could qualify for a $500,000 exclusion on your profit (or $250,000 if single).

The calculation is: Selling price - Adjusted basis - exclusion = amount subject to taxable gains.

For example, if you sold your primary residence for $1M in 2024 and you’re married, you can take that $500k exclusion into account. So, $1M - $600k - $500k results in a negative $100k, meaning you would owe $0 in capital gains tax!

It is very important to document the initial basis and any capital improvements when it comes time to sell your home!

How do you figure how much to pay?

If Q2 is looking a lot like Q1, then take Q1’s net income and multiply it by 20-25%. That is an approximate safe amount to pay.

This is a general rule of thumb and won’t be exact for everyone.

💁🏼‍♀️ no personal miles we’re driven since the hair appointment was at my clients salon that I was already at to conduct a business related activity
